64 of the 193 members of the UN carry blood or violence references in their national flags.

We decided to imagine how some of these flags would look without the blood.

This is the result ↓

South Sudan

Eritrea

Yemen

Lithuania

Laos

Ecuador

What's the point here?

Flags are important symbols that define countries, nations and populations. And we believe in the power of these symbols. For this reason, we believe that reproducing aesthetic choices that cherish violence, often without even reasoning about them, can be a factor in generating even more violence. And even if wars, battles and deaths are part of history, we wonder if these facts are not disproportionately represented in the flags around the world.

In 2017, the Mauritanian government added two red bands to its flag. If flags can change to represent the spilled blood, why couldn't they change to represent peace? Or even culture, nature, other historical facts?

Although this is our main goal, we know that it is rare for a government to decide to change its flag. However, we would be already happy with the simple discussion on the topic.

Nations shouldn't be defined only by their conflicts.

What's next?

This is an ongoing project. More flags will be added soon. Consider subscribing to our news for more new information. We are preparing a physical exposure for when the pandemic is over.

I love it, how can I help?
